Ten villages including Collobrières, La Garde Freinet and Pierrefeu du Var have joined forces with the Office of National Forests, the Departmental Tourist Board of the Var and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region to organize a year-round schedule of guided walks with local naturalists and experts. The walks, which range in length from short local rambles to hikes of several hours, focus on key natural features, the flora nd fauna and local history for each of the villages. Typical walks might include: A walk along the Réal Martin – following the river from Pierrefeu du Var with a forestry worker who explains the local riverside biosphere, called the ripisylve, and the importance of the vineyards in protecting the hills. Plants and beliefs – highlighting medicinal plants, plants used in witchcraft, magic places and the way that plants shape beliefs. The Botanical Path – a four-hour walk from Collobrières with a naturalist who explains local flora, birds and insects. Mankind and the forests – from La Garde Freinet, an easy 90-minute walk with a forestry technician who explains his work and the life of the forest. The accompanied walks cost between euro 6 and euro 8, with children under 10 free. They are conducted in French but you can enjoy them even if your French is limited to a few guidebook phrases. I’ve found that if you can master a little bit of the language, people will try to meet you halfway in English.
